A “controlled explosion” occurred in Limerick as gardaí seized weapons, ammunition, cash and drugs

A controlled explosion was carried out in a field in Limerick yesterday as gardaí seized “suspected firearms and ammunition” as part of a raid against organized crime gangs.
The Defense Force Bomb Squad was called after gardaí from the Limerick Crime Functional Area discovered a suspicious device while searching the field.
A controlled explosion was carried out on the device, which was later found to be a viable explosive.
A total of eight people, including five men and three women, were arrested when gardaí seized the weapons as well as drugs and cash during multiple searches at locations in Limerick, Cork and Clare.
More than 11,310 euros in cash were confiscated, as well as suspected cocaine worth around 53,100 euros, suspected cannabis worth 20,000 euros and suspected Alprazolam and controlled medication tablets worth 4,650 euros.
“Four suspected firearms and ammunition were also seized,” Gardaí added. “All seized evidence will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further review.
“Five men were arrested during this operation for offenses under the provisions of the Criminal Law Act 1997 and detained at Garda stations in the Limerick region under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.”
Gardaí added: “A man has been released from custody and charged with various traffic offences. He will appear in Limerick District Court this morning.
“The other four men remain in custody.
“Three women, who were also arrested for breaches of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994, appeared in Limerick District Court yesterday.”
