It is believed that cemeteries began at the end of World War II when American soldiers who could not afford to send their cars home simply left them in the woods.

The last of the cemeteries was cleared for environmental reasons in 2010 when collectors took parts for salvage and souvenirs, but many eerie photos remain.

Rusted Volkswagens, a Ponticac Chieftain, a 1953 Renault Dauphine, a Studebaker Champion and a Ford Thunderbird were found buried deep in mud and brush.

There are many dedicated car cemeteries around the UK – such as the Reliant Scimitar cemetary in Derbyshire.

The Reliant Robin is known to be both iconic and terrifying – but it’s the Reliant Scimitar sports cars that can be found in large numbers at this Derbyshire scrapyard.

Preston is now home to the Southgate Works cemetery – a former car dealership.

After a massive fire broke out at the site in December 2018, around 150 cars were damaged by the fire, leaving them bare and abandoned.

The few cars that survived the fire remained half buried in foliage.

This site no longer stands as the building itself became a major security hazard and was later demolished.

But eerie images show the slaughter that once took place – and to this day investigators believe the fire was deliberate.
