India’s sluggers frustrated the Australian bowling attack on day three of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, falling just three wickets all day while young savage Shubman Gill plundered 128 runs with a brilliant shot and Virat Kohli reached the stumps undefeated.

The hosts are currently 4-329, with Kohli (70 not out) and Srikar Bharat (16 not out) at the crease – the odds of the first tie of the series appear to be growing.

Kohli is chasing its first test century since November 2019, a 1205-day drought.

Todd Murphy scored the first breakthrough of the morning when Ravindra Jadeja recklessly charged down the field and missed a loft drive that was caught in the middle for 28. It was an amazing shot choice from Jadeja, who had been immensely patient with the racquet on Saturday night.

“What happened? Did someone say something to him so suddenly, in this particular case… he went by air,” former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said in a comment.

“Look at that. What’s that shot? Kohli isn’t impressed and the dressing room won’t be impressed.

“He’s played such responsible innings before so it’s a difficult shot to understand.”

The pitch offered little to the bowlers for the first three days, a significant change from the extremely spin-friendly wickets of the first three tests.

However, Nathan Lyon is still optimistic about a result and excited at the prospect of a potentially exciting finish on day five.

“What I’ve learned over here, the black earth seems to hold together much better than the red earth,” Nathan Lyon said at stumps.

“There aren’t that many footprints out there for spinners to hit.

“We might see it start to ebb and flow a little bit more. But even when speaking to “Starcy” he tries very hard and the ball just seems to stop in the wicket.

“With the warmer weather here, hopefully there will be another result in this game. We just have to bowl well in the morning and get the pressure on in the dressing room.”

“These are the kind of friendlies that are won in the last half hour of day five and these are the kind of friendlies you want to play in,” Lyon added.

“The tough grind with a potentially big reward at the end. They’re challenging but we’re all up for a challenge and it’s real grind, good Test cricket.

Lyon have already bowled 37 overs for just one wicket this innings, with Todd Murphy and Matt Kuhnemann also having one each. Murphy wasn’t introduced to offense until the 32nd over by captain Steve Smith, which was surprising, but he subsequently threw 22 overs in an extremely economical fashion (1-45 with six girls). Kuhnemann was the least used spin trio but had 1-43 from his 13 overs.

Lyon was full of praise for his young Dreher compatriots.

“This is a big moment for the two young spinners and I think they bowled exceptionally well,” said Lyon.

“I think it’s pretty even. We know that games in this part of the world can speed up quickly.”
