Singer/songwriters Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers both found writer/director Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” really creepy
When JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray wrote his review Hereditary And midsummer The latest film from writer/director Ari Aster Beau is scared (You can read the review HERE), he struggled to figure out which genre label best described it. He wrote: “While Aster is known for his horror movies, it’s not easy to categorize. It contains elements of horror and evocative scenes of graphic violence, but is also darkly comedic. Yes, in a way you could call this a comedy, albeit not of the haha type. It’s also Freudian psychodrama.” But as for singer/songwriters Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers, Beau is scared was a frightening horror film as in a conversation published by , they both spoke about being scared of it interview magazine.
Beau is scared follows The mild-mannered but paranoia-ridden Beau embarks on a surreal odyssey to get home to attend his mother’s funeral and, in the process, comes to terms with his greatest fears. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, Parker Posey and Kylie Rogers.
This is how the subject came up in the conversation between Rodrigo and Bridgers:
BRIDGERS: Are you a scary movie guy or what?
RODRIGO: I’m a big fan of thrillers, but I watch a few scary movies here and there. is that your jam
BRIDGERS: Surprisingly no. I hate a scary movie. If my brain has an excuse to have intrusive thoughts, it will take it.
RODRIGO: Oh, definitely. I convince myself I see shit after I get home from watching insidious or so. [Laughs] Also, I watched the new Ari Aster movie Beau is scared and I was so scared. I literally had to leave the theater. I have never experienced such an emotional reaction to a film in my life. It felt like a bad LSD trip.
BRIDGES: [Laughs] I’m so glad you brought this up because you’re right. This is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen but I laughed the whole time.
RODRIGO: That’s the only reasonable reaction. Your body just can’t process it. You have to laugh.
I did not see it Beau is scared nor myself, but I have to admit I’m more likely to watch it soon after hearing how freaked Rodrigo and Bridgers were when they saw it.
