I’ve spent the last few days testing it and apart from a few minor quibbles I really like it. For starters, Benibela delivers a surprisingly detailed user manual, with large print and thorough information on how to set it up, add photos, invite friends and family, and so on. It’s pretty rare these days to see such a comprehensive printing guide, be it for a photo frame or any other technical product. compliments to the company.

Setup is easy: simply connect the frame to your home Wi-Fi network using the touchscreen interface, then pair it with the VPhoto app on your phone. The latter is done by scanning a QR code on the screen or by entering a numeric code; You can also share this code with friends or family, making it just as easy for them to share snaps. The framework also has a dedicated email address, which some may prefer to installing an app.

Are you planning to gift this? You can add photos without opening the box (although unfortunately you’ll have to remove the shrink wrap): just install the app, scan a QR code located under a sticker on the back of the box, then load all the photos or videos and even a gift message. Once the recipient has set up Wi-Fi, your preloads will magically appear.

Whoever gets the frame, the VPhoto app makes it easy to select photos and videos to upload. You can also view media stored on a microSD memory card or copy it from your computer. (There’s 32GB of internal storage, enough for literally tens of thousands of photos.) A nice touch is face detection, which analyzes all images and filters them for faces. So, for example, if you just want a slideshow from a grandchild, you can do that.

The frame runs at an admirably high resolution (1,920 x 1,200 pixels) and delivers bright, sharp and colorful images. To save power, it can be set to only run at certain times – and there’s a motion sensor that turns the screen off until motion is detected.

Now for the complaints. This particular Benibela frame only works in landscape mode; It cannot be rotated for portrait view and cannot be wall mounted, although the Amazon product page states otherwise. And although both the manual and the product page mention USB drive support, there’s no USB port – at least not on this model.

My bigger complaint is with the app, which doesn’t highlight or otherwise tag photos you’ve already uploaded to the frame. Therefore, it’s too easy to accidentally send duplicates. At least there is a “History” tab in the app where you can manually view sent photos. But the main selection screen must also display them. It’s a problem that could be fixed with some simple coding.

Unfortunately, other photo frame apps suffer from the same annoyance (look at you, Nixplay), so it’s just something to live with. Ultimately, the Benibela frame will give you a lot of pleasure, especially if you can snag it on sale.
