Purdue turns up the pitch rotation a bit. Iwinski will get his first start of the season. He has a 1.23 ERA in three appearances from the bullpen in his first eight games. That came in 7 1/3 innings. Calvin Schapira And CJ Backer is likely being considered for Sunday’s launch.
In Akron, Purdue will see a familiar face in the opposing lineup. Jack Firestone, a Zionsville native who played the last three seasons at West Lafayette and appeared in 42 games, was solid on the plate early in the year. He hits .296 with 3 homers and 6 RBI. Ian Pennington is also a hot bat with a .321 average and a 7 RBI home run. As a team, Akron is only batting .228, so it could be a great weekend for Purdue’s early pitching to get back on track.
Purdue’s bats should have a good weekend too. Akron’s team ERA is well over 7 and they’ve given up six runs or more in all but one game. Jo Roththeir starter on Sunday was the best with a 2.79 ERA and a 0-1 record over 9 2/3 innings. Emmit Gillies has a save in four appearances from the bullpen.
On paper, this is a series that Purdue needs to sweep. Holy Cross is 1-7 on the year with their only win against Purdue, but Akron isn’t a heavily pitched team. It was much better with the Boilermaker bats Couper Cornflower And Jake Jarvis each beat 0.375. Paul Toetz Cooled down after a red-hot opening weekend, though Eve Albrecht And Jo Jarvis are both over .300. Purdue’s .287 team average gives them a solid advantage for the weekend.
