Britney Spears says Las Vegas wedding to Jason Alexander was ‘innocent fun’

Britney Spears remembers the day she married her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas.
In the pop icon’s memoirs The woman in Meout October 24, Spears details the moments that led to her impromptu Las Vegas wedding — and everything that happened afterward.
It was January 2004 and Spears, now 41, was “screwed” with Alexander in Sin City.
“I don’t remember that night at all, but as far as I know, he and I were sitting around in the hotel room staying up late watching movies – Mona Lisa smile And The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – then had the brilliant idea of going to A Little White Chapel at half past two in the morning,” writes the “Toxic” singer.
In the book, Spears also writes: “People asked me if I loved him. To put it bluntly, he and I were not in love,” she writes. “I was just honestly very drunk – and probably, in a more general sense, very bored at that time in my life.”
Spears says her parents Jamie and Lynne were not happy about the spontaneous wedding.
“You made too big of a deal out of innocent fun,” she writes. “Everyone has a different perspective on it, but I didn’t take it too seriously. I thought a silly wedding in Las Vegas was something people would do as a joke. Then my family came and acted as if I had started World War III.” . I cried the whole rest of my time in Las Vegas.”

During their visit, Spears’ parents insisted that the 55-hour marriage be annulled.
“My family was so against the wedding that I began to think that perhaps I had accidentally committed a brilliant act,” she writes. “Because I realized: Something about me being under their control and not having a stronger connection to anyone else had become very, very important to them… Maybe it’s worth mentioning that I was supporting them financially at that point.”
Four years into her first marriage, Spears was placed under a court conservatorship that lasted nearly 14 years before ending in November 2021.

Now, Spears finds joy in everyday moments.
“I play with my dogs… [or] Watch episodes of Friends and belly laughs. “I love, love to travel and explore,” she says tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview via email. “I’m a simple girl.”
Spears is also regaining her voice today.
“For the last 15 years or even early in my career, I sat back while people talked about me and told my story for me,” she added in the email interview. “After leaving my conservatory, I finally had the freedom to tell my story without the consequences of the people responsible for my life.”
