Buster Murdaugh’s former classmate Stephen Smith’s body to be exhumed
The mother of Buster Murdaugh’s high school classmate Stephen Smith, who died just a few miles from Alex Murdaugh’s in 2015 Hunting estate in South Carolinasaid she raised enough money to exhume her son’s body.
The 19-year-old was killed in what police initially described as a Hit and run near the Murdaughs’ Islandton hunting property called Moselle, where Alex fatally shot his wife Maggie and youngest son Paul on June 7, 2021.
“We believe it is critical to seek a new goal – an independent exhumation and autopsy – and we launch Justice for Stephen N. Smith with that immediate goal in mind,” Smith’s mother, Sandy Smith, wrote on a GoFundMe page titled ” Independent”. Exhumation and Autopsy,” which raised more than $40,000.
Smith recently told WYFF that the funds were sufficient to proceed with an exhumation.
“They said he was shot in the head. And then it turned out to be a hit and run, and then he got beat up, so the story kept changing,” Smith told the outlet. “…When they told me to hit and run, I said, ‘That’s impossible’ because Stephen wouldn’t have walked down the street. … He would have crossed the forest.”
In a Thursday update on her GoFundMe page, Smith said her family will be “following the exhumation immediately and providing updates as we go.”
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Department (SLED) has reopened an investigation into the death of Stephen Smith.
“SLED has made progress in its investigation into the death of Stephen Smith, but this investigation remains active and ongoing,” Fox News Digital agency said in a statement.
Attorney Eric Bland, who is representing the children of the Murdaughs’ late housekeeper Gloria Satterfield – who died in an apparent fall in 2018 at the Murdaughs’ Moselle home – described the Murdaugh family’s “long-rumored involvement” in Smith’s death in ” Fox & Friends”. earlier this month.
“He was found in the middle of a country road in Hampton County and … the Highway Authority said he was hit by a car, but there was no broken glass, no car parts,” Bland said co-host Pete Hegseth. “His clothing was intact, his shoes were on and he had … a clear head injury that appeared to have been caused by something other than a car.”

Prosecutors say Murdaugh secured $4.3 million in insurance benefits for Satterfield’s family after her death, but the former attorney kept the money to himself and never alerted the family that he received a payout.
On March 2, a Colleton County jury found Murdaugh guilty of the trial 2021 murders his wife and son on the Moselle, raising suspicions about Smith’s mysterious death.
