Captain America’s New Origin retcons could be worse than Secret Empire

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Captain America and the Winter Soldier Special #1Captain Americas The latest retcons have made its origins quite obscure, so much so that they may prove worse than the controversial ones Secret Empire Story in which Steve Rogers was infamously revealed to be an agent of Hydra. As seen in the new Marvel Comics Captain America: Guardians of Liberty Series, the debut of the shadowy organization known as the Outer Circle has revealed that Rogers’ transformation into a super soldier had incredibly dark and secret motivations, as well as the origins of some of his closest allies like Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter. However, there were also some changes that arguably made Steve Rogers less unique in the Marvel Universe.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Inside earlier Guardian of Freedomthe Outer Circle was exposed as five leaders who have been manipulating and policing various aspects of society over the past 100 years. Likewise, Captain America and his shield were integral parts of their Century Game. Represented by the outer ring of Cap’s shield, the Outer Circle controls everything behind the scenes. The next ring represents different systems of society structure such as governments, democracy and communism. The Inner Circle represents organizations like armies, law enforcement, and even spy agencies like SHIELD. Within this ring is the core circle, which represents the world’s population, while the superimposed star is Captain America himself, the super-soldier who has unknowingly been the outer circle’s puppet for decades. There are also five Starpoint agents, including Bucky and Peggy, whose entire lives are manipulated and molded to get close to Roger. None of this was fate (not even Bucky’s transformation into the Winter Soldier).

Well that connected Captain America and the Winter Soldier Special #1 of Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Kev Walker sees the Outer Circle meeting for the first time in 1922. Not only do they create their board that will become Cap’s shield, it is revealed that their idea of creating someone like Captain America , was inspired by Wakanda’s Black Panther. This issue also delivers the surprising truth that July 4th is not Steve Rogers’ actual birthday. All in all, so many dark retcons are happening at once, and one would be right to worry that Captain America and his mythos could get even worse than his days as a Hydra sleeper agent Secret Empire.

Captain America’s origins have gotten so much darker

Captain America Outer Circle Retcons vs. Secret Empire

While it certainly makes for a dynamic conspiracy story, all of these changes in Captain America’s story may not be beneficial to his character’s longevity in the long run. So far the origins of Cap’s shield and his own history have been massively distorted, the intent behind his transformation being incredibly dark. Bucky Barnes was always a puppet before he even became the Winter Soldier. Likewise, Captain America’s unique position as a Marvel hero was somewhat compromised now that he was simply modeled after another legacy hero. It’s also disappointing to lose simple things like sharing a birthday with the nation it symbolizes.

At least inside secret empire, The drastic and villainous changes for Hydra Captain America were the result of Red Skull and a Cosmic Cube literally rewriting reality and history. Additionally, these changes were largely rolled back as Captain America reverted to his normal status quo as Marvel’s first Avenger. In contrast, everything happens in Guardian of Freedom feels much more permanent, a notable difference that can have nasty consequences for Captain America fans. From the looks of it, it feels like a lot of the changes have either been corrupted Captain Americas Legacies or things taken away that make him unique and special in the Marvel Universe. While the changes have certainly created epic obstacles for Rogers to overcome if he reclaims his shield and purpose as his own, we hope Marvel isn’t overdoing it with all of these new changes to his character. Captain America and the Winter Soldier Special #1 is now on sale.
