Corey Oates Injury, Broken Jaw, Brisbane Broncos Victory Over Cowboys, Scott Drinkwater, Justice, Suspension, News

Broncos veteran Corey Oates has a “clean break” in his jaw and Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater “is going to be spending some time on the sidelines,” according to Fox League’s Michael Ennis.

Oates charged at Drinkwater and attempted to score a second-half try before North Queensland’s gun shoulder made contact with his opponent’s jaw.

Unable to ground the ball, Oates immediately grabbed his face, evidently in distress, as Drinkwater received his marching orders from referee Ashley Klein.

Fox League’s Corey Parker said the veteran winger is likely to be sidelined for “four to six weeks”.

“He’s got a clean fracture of his jaw, he’s in the ER as we speak and has scans to see what the diagnosis will be.”

“Whether there’s plates, whether there’s surgery, but you’d think Corey Oates won’t be on that side for four to six weeks, which is a big blow to the Broncos.

“I mean it’s a sport with a lot of collisions, Corey Oates is 6ft 3 and 110kg and is trying to score a try but on the other side Drinkwater was trying to stop a try.

“The Match Review Committee will look into it for sure.”

At the post-game press conference, both Kevin Walters and Adam Reynolds disagreed that Klein made the right decision in sending Drinkwater into the Sin Trap.

“Probably not, but I’m not in the heat of the moment,” Walters said.

“Oatesy isn’t good yeah…that wasn’t a very good incident in our game, the shoulder load, interesting to see what’s happening with the NRL.

“It’s a tough game, Oatesy did so well too, had a good start to the year for us and took a nasty hit.”

“I questioned it on the field, it’s hard, it’s all happening at high speed, and obviously when you look at the answer it doesn’t look too good,” Reynolds added.

“We lose a player for the entire game, several weeks, I don’t think 10 minutes is justifiable.”

Meanwhile, Fox League’s Greg Alexander said Oates was an “awkward” player who needed to be tackled, particularly just six feet from the try-line.

“Looking back at it, I figured I wouldn’t want to attack Corey Oates two yards from the tryline,” Alexander said.

“How do you do that? He’s a very awkward customer and I thought Drinkwater just stood his ground and turned his shoulder to attract attention.

“I think it’s a shoulder load because he turned sideways, end of story, there wasn’t any power in his going forward at Oates, he held his own.

“I think it’s panic from Drinkwater, originally I think Oates is going to go into the corner but he just stares at him,” added Fox League’s Michael Ennis.

“He goes to brace but his arm isn’t pinned to his body but the fact of the matter is his shoulder is touching his jaw.

“Drinkwater will be spending some time on the sidelines.”
