According to the official synopsis, Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson), a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home, meets Peter Pan (Alexander Molony), a boy who refuses to grow up. Along with her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell (Yara Shahidi), she travels to the magical world of Neverland with Peter. There she meets an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook (Jew law) and embarks on an exciting and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.
The ensemble cast also includes Alyssa Wapanatâhk, Joshua Pickering, Jacobi Jupe, Molly Parker, Alan Tudyk and Jim Gaffigan. Lowery directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote Associate Toby Halbrooks.
“In producing ‘Peter Pan and Wendy,’ we wanted to create a film that would honor both the original text by JM Barrie and Walt Disney’s animated adaptation; We wanted to infuse our retelling with emotional sincerity, an open heart and a great desire for adventure,” Lowery said in a press statement. “Hundreds of incredible artists have spent many years bringing this film to the big screen; I look forward to audiences seeing her work, taking part in this ride and rediscovering an evergreen story from a new perspective.”
Jim Whitaker (Pete’s Dragon), Adam Borba (A Wrinkle in Time), Thomas M. Hammel (Thor: Ragnarok) and screenwriter Halbrooks are executive producers.
The feature was originally slated to premiere in 2022 but was met with delays. Lowery previously said colliders in 2021 that “Peter Pan and Wendy” is his “favorite project” so far.
“I personally think it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done, which I didn’t expect to get into, but it is,” Lowery said. “I’ve never been more in love with a movie than this one. We still have a few weeks to go and I just love this film. It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever done.”
Lowery continued, “It’s ironically the most mature film I’ve ever made. I went with that, thinking my entry into this film was that I have a classic case of Peter Pan Syndrome. I don’t want to grow up. who makes And I thought that would appeal to me about it, but as I was shooting it, writing it, and now directing it, and bringing it to life, I realized that this is a movie about me letting that go. Whether that’s good or bad I haven’t processed yet, but it’s the first film I’ve done from an adult perspective, if that makes any sense.”
Peter Pan and Wendy launches April 28 on Disney+.
