Patrick Mahomes made a bold statement overseas on Sunday after his Kansas City Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins 21-14 in Germany.

“I think it’s the best defense in the NFL,” Mahomes said of the Chiefs’ defense. “If we have a defense like that, we will handle this offense, I promise you that. We will be a difficult team to beat.”

49ers receiver Deebo Samuel addressed those comments Tuesday in the “Up & Adam’s show.”

“It suits you, man,” Samuel told host Kay Adams. “I think everyone will think they have the best offense in the league and the best defense in the league. Why wouldn’t you? I’ll say the same thing. I will say we have the best offense in the league and the best defense in the league.”

The 49ers’ defense made a big addition during the team’s bye week, bringing in defensive end Chase Young in a deal with the Washington Commanders. Young should add an extra punch to the underperforming defensive line after the 49ers collected just 18 sacks in eight games, which ranks 24th in the league.

“It should be very interesting to add this young guy to the team that is playing at a high level,” said Samuel. “He’s pretty healthy. We’ll see what we have.”

San Francisco’s roster is loaded, especially on defense. Young is a former No. 2 overall pick. Nick Bosa is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw are arguably the NFL’s best one-two punch at linebacker.

The roster’s talent is the reason Samuel and the 49ers’ confidence hasn’t wavered during the team’s current three-game losing streak.

“I don’t believe [the confidence] has sunk,” Samuel said to Adams. “At the end of the day, we know what we are capable of.” We started hot and hit little bumps in the road. That will happen. You won’t win them all. You just have to take it step by step and prepare the way we prepared.

“We put a lot of emphasis on gaining insights, staying on the field and maintaining performance – just getting back to what we do.”

Samuel and the 49ers have a chance to get back in the win column on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Samuel, who missed San Francisco’s last two games before the bye week, is on track to play at TIAA Bank Field.
