Dog found with major laceration off I-595 exit and recovering at Deerfield Beach Animal Hospital – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

DANIA BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – A dog found with its side cut open at a Broward County freeway exit is finally being healed at a veterinary hospital as authorities investigate what appears to be a horrifying case of animal abuse.

The dog, who those who found him have since dubbed Zeus, was spotted at an Interstate 595 exit in Dania Beach Tuesday night.

Now, thanks to good Samaritan Kay Khal, the animal is getting the medical attention it needs.

“It’s really sad. I couldn’t leave that dog on the side of the road,” she said.

Khal said it was about 10:30 p.m. when she drove east on I-595 and took the exit onto US 1.

As she rounded the bend, Khal said, she saw the pup in the middle of the roadway, in an industrial area far from residential buildings. It appears that the animal was cut into pieces and then discarded.

“His cuts were so bad that he would have bled to death or died,” Khal said. “Someone would have come around the corner and hit him.”

Khal and others stopped to get the dog into their vehicle and take the dog to a vet with help from iHeart Animal Rescue.

“We know he’s unwell; he has lost a lot of blood,” said Cindy Mucciaccio of iHeart Animal Rescue.

Zeus is taken by Dr. Lance Weidenbaum treated at Deer Run Animal Hospital in Deerfield Beach.

“I think someone just took a knife or a sharp object and just started walking,” Weidenbaum said, making a slashing motion with his hand. “He will need major reconstructive surgery, which we will do today.”

Zeus will be expensive to treat, and when he recovers he will need a home. Khal said people can help through donations, foster care, or adoption.

“You must help because these poor animals are helpless and will die without our help,” she said.
