DPIIT launch exercise to prepare logistics cost framework

The Industry and Domestic Trade Promotion Department (DPIIT) is beginning an exercise to prepare a framework for determining logistics costs in the country, an official said Thursday.
To this end, the department is holding a workshop on March 20th, which will be attended by government representatives as well as experts, academics, professors and statisticians from all over the world.
“We hope to create an index measuring the country’s logistics costs in a year’s time. After that it will be an annual affair. We are organizing an international workshop on logistics cost frameworks,” the official said.

Many international players from countries like Japan, Korea and Germany will participate.
“We will consult on different modules and choose the framework that suits us best,” added the official.
Currently, the government is running certain estimates that suggest logistics costs in India are around 13-14 percent of the country’s GDP.
The government has introduced a national logistics policy and an initiative by PM Gati Shakti to increase industry competitiveness and reduce logistics costs.
