Driver killed in two-vehicle collision near border

SAN DIEGO — A driver was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 805 at state Route 905 near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 5:27 a.m. when a 21-year-old man driving a Volkswagen coupe crashed into the rear of a Honda sport-utility vehicle at a high rate of speed, said Jesse Matias of the California Highway Patrol in a press release.

The driver of the Honda, a 58-year-old from Tijuana, Mexico, died at the scene, according to authorities, while the driver of the Volkswagen was taken to a hospital.

According to the CHP, driving under the influence of alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.

Several northbound lanes of I-805 were closed for several hours.

The identity of the deceased is being kept secret until the family is notified.

Anyone who witnessed this crash is asked to contact the CHP San Diego Area at (858) 293-6000.
