It is believed that Bernard Mongan (20) was caught after a car associated with him was subsequently found containing empty pizza boxes.

Mr Mongan is on trial after a judge ruled the case was too serious to be dealt with in district court.

Judge David McHugh adjourned the case to Blanchardstown District Court to prepare a book of evidence.

Mr Mongan, with an address at a hotel in Lucan, is accused of stealing three Domino’s pizzas worth €60 and €40 in cash from a man.

The offense under Section 14 of the Theft and Fraud Act is said to have occurred at Foxborough Court in Lucan on November 7 last year.

Garda Sergeant Maria Callaghan said the DPP agreed for the case to be heard at District Court level, subject to the judge’s jurisdiction review.

Outlining the case for the prosecution, she said that a delivery driver was delivering a pizza to the area when he was approached by a man who was allegedly the defendant.

The man presented the delivery man with a “sharp pointed instrument”, believed to be a knife or screwdriver, Sgt Callaghan said. The suspected robber then took the pizzas and cash from the victim, she said.

According to the prosecution, a car was seen on CCTV in the area and when gardaí found it, “pizza boxes” were discovered inside.

The defendant was allegedly associated with this car.

Judge McHugh refused to accept jurisdiction and adjourned the case for service of a book of evidence.

Once the book is finished, Mr Mongan will be sent to Dublin District Criminal Court for trial.

The defendant has not yet responded to the charges. He was remanded on bail until December.
