Evan Rachel Wood files alleged texts and voicemails to prove she didn’t pressure Marilyn Manson’s accuser

Evan Rachel Wood refutes claims that they a Marilyn Manson prosecutor in to make false accusations against the rocker, arguing via screenshots and voicemails that model Ashley Morgan Smithline had first approached her with allegations of sexual assault and then was pressured by Manson’s fans and legal team to recant.
Attorneys for Wood, 35, filed their statement in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday dismissing Smithline’s claims — made in an affidavit filed by Manson’s attorneys last week — that she and others “repeated Smithline.” gassuffered” to believe she had been sexually abused by the metal seesaw, 54.
“I have never pressured or manipulated Ashley Morgan Smithline into making any allegations against her [Manson]and I certainly never pressured or manipulated her to make allegations that were untrue,” wrote Wood, who has herself accused Manson of sexual assault. “It was Ms. Smithline who first contacted me in March 2019.”

The actress said she only met Smithline once in person, at an October 2020 meeting of alleged survivors filmed for the documentary Rising of the Phoenix. Wood said she never spoke to Smithline on the phone prior to the meeting, at which Smithline described the abuse Manson allegedly inflicted on her during their brief relationship.
Smithline has not responded to requests for comment from PEOPLE. in one statement to Rolling StoneResponding to Wood’s explanation, Smithline said: “Evan is full of s—. This is my comment. She says everything she can to discredit me.”
Wood’s statement also included screenshots of several private Instagram messages allegedly shared between Wood and Smithline, including one in which Smithline tells the star, “I can’t breathe. I have no reason to make this up!” after her allegations were made public in May 2021 People Cover story and covered on The view.
Smithline also accused the star of sexual abuse in a civil lawsuit filed in June 2021 Dismissed January 2023 because she didn’t have a lawyer. Manson has denied all allegations against him, including allegations of sexual abuse by 11 women.
Other screenshots show that Smithline appeared to have growing concerns about harassment from Manson supporters, as she reportedly wrote to Wood in May 2021: “[His fans]are moving on. You could watch him [plead] guilty of beating and raping a 12-year-old saying, “He’s innocent. Where is the proof?’ It takes a special kind of person to threaten rape and abuse victims with rape and abuse.”
“Just know that YOU set me free. By listening I love you,” Smithline reportedly wrote to Wood in March 2022.

Wood’s file also includes voicemails left by Smithline for a friend in June 2022, which appear to show the model discussing a call she allegedly received from Manson’s attorney, Howard King, who eventually provided the court with the affidavit that in which she recanted her allegations.
“He called… I’ll play the message for you, it’s like, ‘Hi Ashley, this is Howard King… I’d like to speak to you directly, no lawyers or anything,’ he said, ‘you know, just talk like humans.’ ‘ Smithline reportedly says in the voicemail. “And the only reason he even called me a week ago and left a message is because he thinks I’m the weak link and he might want to make amends with me to hit on the other girls and say that it was all like a trick.”
In a statement to PEOPLE, King Woods denied the allegations and said: “I never discussed Ashley Smithline’s allegations against Brian Warner until she reached out to me and terminated her attorney. Furthermore, when Ms. Smithline spoke to me for almost two hours recently, we recorded the conversation in full and this recording proves that everything in her statement was taken from her words, not mine.”
manson filed a defamation lawsuit against Wood and Illma Gore in March 2022, claiming the couple conspired to coerce other women into making allegations against him.
In documents filed Monday, Wood slammed Manson’s lawsuit, writing that it was filed “without a scrap of evidence to support his baseless allegation.” It was also pointed out that Manson had never attempted to get Smithline to testify to oppose the anti-SLAPP motions filed by Wood in April 2022.

“[Manson] understood that if [Wood and Gore] had a chance to question Smithline, the real truth would emerge: [Wood and Gore] never pressured or manipulated Smithline,” the documents said. Instead of requesting Smithline’s testimony, [Manson] pursued a statement with a (false) narrative that [Manson’s] The lawyer could create, edit and control drafts.”
The documents also contradict Smithline’s timeline of events, arguing that it was primarily Manson’s “fans and attorneys” who pressured her to retract her allegations, not Wood and Gore.
“The real pressure Smithline faced was not to make allegations [Manson]— it was to withdraw them,” the documents read. “Smithline’s explanation is therefore entirely unreliable.”
Smithline’s affidavit was filed on February 23, and in it she said that in conversations with Wood, she began to question whether Manson had, in fact, abused her, and said Wood and others suggested she “just misremembered.” and “suppressed”. their memories of their time together after Smithline told them Manson had not abused them.
A representative for Wood, in a statement to PEOPLE at the time, denied that this was the case.
“Evan never pressured or manipulated Ashley. It was Ashley who first contacted Evan about the abuse she suffered,” the statement said. “It is unfortunate that the harassment and threats Ashley received after filing her federal lawsuit appeared to pressure her to change her testimony.”
