Expert on authoritarianism predicts why the GOP will finally implode

Expert on authoritarianism Ruth Ben Ghiat believes that Republicans’ increasingly extreme positions can only backfire.
It’s a “very scary and sad time for America,” the New York University history professor and author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present admitted on the latest episode of the Daily Beast podcast, The New Abnormal.
The GOP is now an autocratic entity, hollowed out and “bunkered” with the ardent support of former President Donald Trump, she argued.
But it can only go one way for Republicans because they are “so far removed from what the people want,” the scholar said.
“Because of this — what Trump calls ‘the final battle’ — they will try at all costs to get back into the White House so they can abolish democracy, because they know they’ll never do it otherwise.” I will be back win legally,” said Ben-Ghiat.
“They already haven’t won the popular vote, and now that they’re being so extreme, they’re going to anger more and more Americans,” she said. “I don’t have a time frame for it. It has to happen before 2024, but we will get there and it will strengthen our democracy.”
