RIGHTEOUS city Star Matthew O’Brien talks about playing the film’s villain James Rafferty and explains that his devious character actually has a heart.

Tonight viewers will see James propose to Hayley and Matthew believes he isn’t just after the former pub owner’s money.

“The only thing I can rely on is love,” he emphasizes.

“Of course we all know that love can make us do very strange things and James is strange at best, a bit socially inept. I think he really loves Hayley, but the way he goes about his work and makes money is the problem. But I think he really wants to impress her.

“I would say he’s very complex in that he wants Hayley to love him for who he is, but I think he feels hugely insecure about who he is. A lot of this leads to him doing things that aren’t very smart,.

An upcoming episode will also feature an unconscious James at the bottom of a staircase after being discovered by Sharon and Carol.

The incident occurs immediately after he and Zack kidnapped Carol, who kidnapped her when the intended target, Sharon, arrived too late.

Matthews also reveals that he has a second job as a tour guide at Slane Castle and fans of the show will have to pay attention as he shows them around the historic building.

“As a tour guide there, I feel like we have a diverse mix of visitors, from American tourists to locals.

Sometimes during the tour some people ask, “Are you James Rafferty?” and I said, “Today I’m Matthew, but sometimes I play James Rafferty!”
