Ambulance services have launched a search operation after a child went missing while swimming in Co Cork today.

The child is understood to have gotten into trouble while swimming at Fountainstown beach.

Gardaí and ambulances are on scene and the Shannon coastguard helicopter is scanning the water after the alarm went off around 4.30pm this afternoon.

The Crosshaven Coast Guard volunteer lifeboat crew have been lowered into the water and one lifeboat is in the water.
