Gardai have warned about the dangers of fireworks after a major seizure in Dublin “a busy night ahead” for emergency services.

The 29 boxes of multiple fireworks, worth around €8,000, were seized by gardaí who carried out a search of a building in Finglas, Dublin 11, last night.

Gardai said they would like to remind people that the sale, possession and use of fireworks is illegal, ahead of what has been a difficult night for them and other emergency services.

“As part of the ongoing investigation into Operation Tombola, which targets the supply of illegal fireworks, gardaí carried out a search of a building in Finglas, Dublin 11 last night,” gardaí said.

“In total, 29 boxes containing multiple fireworks worth around €8,000 were seized by gardaí. The investigation into this attack is ongoing.

“Ahead of a busy night for all emergency services, An Garda Síochána would like to remind people that the sale, possession and use of fireworks is illegal in this country.

“Fireworks are dangerous and can cause serious injury and/or suffering to people and domestic animals and potentially cause fires on properties if they continue to burn after landing.”

Gardai added that it is an offense to throw or aim lit fireworks at a person or property.

They particularly appeal to parents and adults to inform children about the dangers of fireworks.

Authorities are urging caution ahead of this Halloween as it was revealed that 183 fireworks incidents were reported to gardaí last year.

The Irish Independent reported that the use of encrypted messaging apps to smuggle illegal fireworks into Ireland is increasing.

The sale of fireworks is banned in Ireland due to a lack of manufacturing standards, but purchasing them is legal in Northern Ireland, where they are sourced and brought across the border.

Gardaí are urging caution when using fireworks this Halloween and reminding people that illegal use of fireworks is punishable by fines and possible jail time.
