The Giants put Patrick Bailey on the injured list a day after suffering a 7-Day concussion The rookie catcher left the game on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs in the seventh inning after a collision on home plate.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters after the game that Bailey had a “potential concussion,” and tests confirmed Wednesday’s prognosis.
The Giants also selected outfielder Wade Meckler to the Triple-A Sacramento. In response, catcher Joey Bart and outfielder Luis Matos were recalled from Sacramento.
Bailey, who came on as a pinch hitter at Wrigley Field early in the seventh inning, picked up the injury in the bottom half of the Cubs’ inning when Nick Madrigal groundballed Casey Schmitt. The third baseman threw home and Jeimer Candelario collided with Bailey, although he didn’t leave the game immediately.
The Giants pinched Bailey in the ninth inning.
The injury slows Bailey’s strong rookie season as he hits .248/.304/.390 with 17 doubles, seven homers and 45 RBI.
Meckler has struggled since his surprise call from Triple-A, hitting .232/.328/.250 with a double, four RBI and 25 strikeouts.
Bart is returning to the big leagues after spending the last three months in Sacramento while Matos is back after a week with the River Cats.
