Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has reportedly been cleared for contact and is expected to return in Week 9 against the Raiders

Accordingly, quarterback Daniel Jones is about to return to the field for the New York Giants Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post And NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. He has reportedly been cleared for contact and is poised to play in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jones has been out since playing against the Miami Dolphins in Week 5. He left the game in the fourth quarter with a neck injury after taking a hard hit on his sixth sack of the day and did not return. He missed Weeks 6, 7 and 8, but showed consistent progress from week to week, getting more done in training as time went on.

The Giants get Jones back just in time – literally. Jones’ backup Tyrod Taylor, who has been the starter since Jones’ loss in Week 6, injured his ribs Sunday against the New York Jets and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito took over for Taylor in the second half. The Giants lost 13-10 on a walk-off field goal.

Is the timing a bit suspicious? Absolutely. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that the Giants were eyeing a Week 10 return for Jones, so it’s really, really convenient that he was released just before the game in which his backup was injured. But given Jones and the Giants’ history with neck injuries (a neck injury ended his 2021 season), they know it’s nothing to worry about.

Jones has six days to get back up to speed. He and the Giants take on the Raiders on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
