Glenn Maxwell misses Sheffield Shield clash after injury flare-up

Glenn Maxwell’s return from a badly broken leg has only lasted one Sheffield Shield match, with the weapons all-rounder set for further rehab after being forced out of Victoria’s clash with NSW.

With the one-day series against India still firmly in sight, beginning March 17 in Mumbai, Maxwell has been cotton-wound after also injuring his wrist in his comeback game last week.

Maxwell has played just one game since breaking his leg badly in November last year but was selected in Australia’s ODI squad for the Indian series and will not play again until he travels to the subcontinent.

Victorian manager Chris Rogers on Wednesday confirmed why Maxwell, who was set to play the game that was moved to Albury by the SCG, was absent from the 13-man Victorian squad.

“Glenn Maxwell’s injury is advanced enough for him to take precautions and prepare for the one-day series,” Rogers said.

“He won’t play.”

While Maxwell won’t play, smoking hot Victorian slugger Matt Short will get another chance to impress national selectors who already have the 25-year-old on their radar.

Rogers said Short, who was the BBL player of the tournament and then made his first one-day and shield century for the Vics within a week, often popped up in his conversations with the selectors and an Australian call might not be far off be.

“I can talk to selectors and his name comes up regularly in conversations,” Rogers told SEN.

“Specifically the white ball sides, the one day side and the T20 side, where do you put him?

“There are some people there who still do the job, but I think his time will come.”

Briefly missed out on selection for the ODI series in India but was approached as a potential replacement at the helm of the order for retired Australia captain Aaron Finch in the national T20 team.
