Greta Gerwig thought Barbie could be a career ending

Speaking to Dua Lipa about the At your service Podcast, Greta Gerwig admitted that the thought of doing it Barbie was so terrifying that she believed it might even end her career if it didn’t work out. “It was exciting because it was terrifying‘ Gerwig said. “I think that was a big part of it, like, ‘Oh, no, Barbie.’ It felt like a hoax to write it like, ‘Where do you even start and what would the story be?’ And I think it was that feeling that I got, because I knew it was going to be a really interesting terror. Usually the best things are where you’re like, ‘I’m scared of that.’ Anything where you’re thinking, “This could be career ending” — you’re thinking, “I probably should do it.”“
Greta Gerwig added that the film had the full support of Mattel, who “so much trust and so much freedom, and I think that’s incredibly rare. Whatever we wanted, they didn’t try to micromanage it. You were there as a partner and that was extraordinary.” Gerwig had access to the complete archives of Barbie history. “They really put their trust in us” She said. “And I think a big reason for that was actually Margot and Tom [Ackerley] and the way they also said, ‘We want to do this movie and we want to do their vision. We don’t have to make a Barbie movie. We want to do This one here.‘“
That Barbie Movie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, plus America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir and more.
