Hailey Baldwin Bieber shares some information she’s learned since experiencing a stroke last year.

The 26-year-old model recently revealed on her Instagram Story that it’s been a year since she made it experienced the health scare this led her to discover that she had patent foramen ovale (PFO), a heart condition in which a hole exists between the left and right sides of her heart.

“Can not believe It’s been a year since I had a mini stroke that led to my PFO diagnosis,” Baldwin Bieber shared on Instagram alongside a YouTube video she recorded a year ago, explaining how she learned about the condition.

“Given that it’s the one-year mark of such a life-changing event, I wanted to share all of the information I’ve learned about PFO and resources on how to donate,” she added, posting a donation link to UCLA Health, which helped diagnose their condition.

In her next two Instagram story slides, she shared some facts from UCLA Health about PFOincluding that it is “the most common congenital heart defect” and affects “20% of all people”.

The paper states that PFO “occurs in 60% of first-degree relatives” and that “60% of people who have a stroke with no known cause are likely to have PFO.”

In a second post, she gave some information on how PFO occurs, saying that the “passageway between the left and right atria of the heart” exists in everyone before birth but eventually closes. However, as in the case of Baldwin Bieber, “about 1 in 4 people don’t shut their lids.”

Baldwin Bieber explained in a video in April that after her mini-stroke, she underwent transcranial Doppler, a “more accurate” and “deeper” ultrasound test to detect strokes caused by blood clots.

She said it was her diagnosed with a grade 5 PFO – the “highest possible grade”, and the small hole between the left and right side of her heart measured between 12 and 13 millimeters.

Baldwin Bieber then underwent a procedure to close the PFO on her doctor’s recommendation. A small, button-like object was inserted into her groin through the femoral vein to plug the small hole, and she said her heart tissue was growing back around the occlusive device.

She shared at the time that the PFO closure procedure went “very smoothly” and that she was recovering.

“The biggest thing I feel is I’m just really relieved that we were able to figure it all out, that we managed to close it, that I’ll be able to get out of this really scary situation and just be mine life to live.” She said.
