Harry and Meghan are learning that Hollywood only respects real royalty
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex seem to be learning the hard way that Hollywood only submits to real institutions.
In California, there’s always been a grudging respect for the royals. Not just, as Harry and Meghan might have thought, because they have fancy titles and wear tiaras, but because they have a formal, constitutional role that goes beyond mere celebrity.
Americans may not have a class system as such, but Los Angeles, like the rest of the United States, has a hierarchy of fame and fortune. Those at the top of the tree are usually the ones walking the path and leading the conversation. Being superficially famous only gets you so far, until people start asking: What’s the point of you?
For example, within days of being roasted by South Park as “the dumb prince and his dumb wife,” the Sussexes announced their daughter “Princess Lilibet” had been christened in LA last week — in the process affirm their royal dignity despite spending the last few months ruining the institution to which their titles belong.
But as the satirical caricature illustrates such a thing devastating effectGlobal audiences have a knack for quickly chasing all of Harry and Meghan’s attempts to enjoy all the privileges of royal life without the responsibilities that come with it.
What’s most striking since moving to the US is how they look inward in a country that values the nurturing of hope and opportunity.
They spoke in theirs Megxit Statement about carving out “a progressive new role” that would put her on an equal footing with the likes of the Gates and the Obamas — and yet much of what we’ve heard from the couple so far has been self-serving rather than in the service of others.
They could therefore do worse than attend the coronation, if only to show Tinseltown that they still have a part to play in British history, rather than behaving in a way that has become as predictable as a screenplay for The Crown.
