After not appearing in the franchise formerly known as DCEU since 2017, Cavill is finally reprising his version of Superman this year. Cavill first wore the suit in 2013 man of Steel as part of Zack Snyder’s launch of the cinematic universe based on DC Comics. While it was brief, Cavill’s Superman appeared in the Black Adam Post-credits scene where he and Dwayne Johnson’s anti-heroes came into conflict.
However, a new report suggests that DC Films had an alternative idea for bringing Cavill’s Superman back to the DCU. Corresponding THRformer DC Films boss Walter Hamada was working on one “long term plan” for Cavill’s incarnation of the DC icon. According to their sources, Cavill’s Superman would have made small appearances in various DCU films as part of a “breaded” Strategy. The long-term goal was to expand his performances into one Crisis on Infinite Earths-based film that would have returned Cavill’s Superman to the DCU on a full-time basis. So far, Hamada and no one involved at Warner Bros. have commented on the story.
Why the Crisis on Infinite Earths wouldn’t help the DCU
What’s the problem with that? Crisis on Infinite Earths The plan is that it misses the point of the iconic plot. Using this arc as a means of bringing Cavill’s Superman back would have been redundant. Hamada almost approached this as a way to solve a problem that never existed, since Cavill’s Superman was still in the DCU at the time and it wasn’t as if he had been trapped or held back in another universe. Johnson also mentioned how Hamada rejected the idea of using Cavill’s Superman, so he had to go through the former DC Films boss to include the character Black Adam.
The other problem with Crisis on Infinite Earths being used as a vehicle for the DCU is that this was a story that had already been made into live-action, and only recently. Between December 2019 and January 2020, The CW’s Arrowverse franchise did its own thing Crisis on Infinite Earths Adaptation after building up mostly through the iconic storyline in recent seasons The Lightning Show. Even in the five-part crossover event, the Arrowverse integrated the DCU when Ezra Miller’s Flash crossed over and shared a scene with Grant Gustin’s version of the DC icon. Trying to replicate that arc in the DCU to bring Cavill’s Superman back regularly would be a mistake, simply because Crisis on Infinite Earths is not a story intended to act as a kind of band-aid.
Do Crisis on Infinite Earths on the big screen would be a treat for DC fans across the board, but there’s no basis for that in the DCU right now. In the end, that arc may never be finished, as DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently taking the franchise in a new direction as they work on a 10-year roadmap. With the fate of Cavill superman currently on the air, time will be good when he will continue as Man of Steel in the DCU.
