How Often Should You Replace Your Linens?

Your sheets are an important part of your bedding set. They extend the life of your mattress and duvet and ensure that you sleep comfortably. Although most people tend to buy a pair of sheets and use them until they fall apart, that really isn’t ideal – for your mattress or overall comfort. That raises a big question: how often should you replace your linens? Spolier alert: Probably more often than now.
To investigate this issue in more detail, we consulted a professional. “In general, the lifespan of your linens is two years,” says Laurie Fulford, laundry expert at SouthShare. However, she cautions, “It can vary by fabric.” More specifically, sheets made from linen or 100% Egyptian cotton or Pima cotton tend to last longer than other types — “three years or more,” according to Fulford. Higher thread count sheets — which are more expensive — can also last longer compared to lower thread count sheets, she adds.
Incidentally, there is also an age limit for your pillows: this is generally recommended Replace them every two yearsin addition to regular washing.
Of course, personal preferences also play a role when choosing new bed sheets. Cotton, linen, and bamboo bedding tend to be the most breathable—and best – for hot sleepers. If you prefer a silkier feel, consider satin or real silk sheets. And if you just can’t handle wrinkles, microfiber is probably a good choice.
If you don’t feel like chasing your head around when to buy new sheets, there are a few other things that can alert you that it’s time for an upgrade. “Signs of wear and tear, such as discoloration, fading, and ripped or frayed areas, are the most obvious signs that it’s time to buy new sheets,” says Fulford. “Furthermore, if you find that even after washing, your linens don’t smell as fresh and clean as they used to, it might be a good idea to buy a fresh set.”
So… is it time to upgrade your sheet set? We suspect so, and have a few popular options to consider.
These are a bit more expensive than your standard blades, but they have a huge following supporting them. They’re made from a special polyester/spandex blend that feels lightweight, keeps you cool, and wicks moisture. This set is also designed to resist shrinkage and remain wrinkle free. Basically, it does a little bit of everything.
One Five Star Fan called them “the most beautiful sheets I’ve ever owned,” adding, “They’re worth every dollar.” It feels like putting on your favorite basketball shorts. Super cool and super soft.”
These breathable sheets are Amazon best sellers. They’ve received rave reviews for their soft feel, deep pockets, and wrinkle-free appearance. They also only cost $28! Choose from 45 color options, ranging from muted whites and grays to bolder hues.
“These are the most comfortable sheets I’ve ever owned,” said a satisfied customer. “They are luxurious without the price. I have other sheet sets that I’ve spent over $150 on and these don’t compare.”
This 400 thread count option from California Design Den is an Amazon favorite (and, as mentioned above, lasts longer than a synthetic set). Enjoy deep pockets, a cooling satin finish, and an incredibly soft feel. Choose from one of 38 color options.
“The sheets were thick enough that I know they’ll last and get softer over time,” one shared happy buyer. “After washing out the size, they were smooth and comfortable and neither too crisp nor too soft.”
Would you like to try linen? Breathable yet durable, these dapu sheets are perfect for hot sleepers who want a set that can withstand a lot of abuse. They’re pre-washed for a softer feel and come in a range of pretty colors.
