Norad – the North American Aerospace Defense Command – is also keeping an eye on Santa Claus.

They’ve been doing this for a long time, starting in 1955.

Apparently it all started by accident when a child accidentally called CONAD (Norad’s predecessor)’s unlisted phone number after seeing an ad in a newspaper encouraging children to call Santa Claus.

The boss at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, reportedly picked up the phone and told staff to check the radar for signs that Santa Claus was heading south from the North Pole.

And so it has continued ever since.
