I warned my sister that she chose a “dog name” for her baby and he is being bullied – she accused me of being a “bad aunt”.

PARENTS have always embarrassed their children, especially when it comes to names.
An aunt makes sure her nephew doesn’t get bullied because of his name.
Reddit user ChanceLow5494 posted her puzzle for other users to contribute.
“I (f20) live with my parents while I go to college,” she said in the foreword.
The aunt-to-be has an older sister, Emily, who is expecting a son.
“Emily is currently 8 months pregnant with her boyfriend’s child,” she wrote. “She’s been talking a lot about baby names and recently decided she wanted to name the baby Buddy.”

Shocked by the choice of name, she initially thought her sister was joking.
“At first I actually thought Emily was joking, but no, she meant it,” she wrote. “She said her heart is in that name.”
Unfortunately, the aunt did not have much support from the grandparents-to-be.
“My parents didn’t respond,” she said. “And just said, ‘If that’s the name you want, by all means.'”
The aunt insisted that Emily choose a different name for fear her nephew might be bullied over the name, which is usually associated with dogs.
“I told Emily that the name Buddy will bully the kid,” she wrote. “And that people associate that name with dogs.”
The mom-to-be, however, disagreed with her sister, even calling her a “nasty aunt.”
“She was very offended and said she can name her child whatever she wants,” she revealed. “And said I was a bad aunt.”
The aunt-to-be reassured Redditors that she’s remained sensitive and civil about the matter, which she says could hurt the child’s future livelihood.
“If she really pulls off that name I think she would be making a mistake,” she wrote. “And could subject my nephew to bullying and teasing until he’s old enough to change his name.”
She also gave a cultural reason for the name’s association with dogs.
“We live in Australia where Buddy is strictly used as a pet name and a nickname for boys,” she wrote. “So I think the name is a bad choice and could lead to bullying.”

Redditors overwhelmingly sided with the aunt on the baby name issue.
“Names are extremely important and can affect so many things in a person’s life,” replied Reddit user Partassipant. “Whether they’re being bullied or if they’re being called back on an application.”
