RESEARCHERS have given a taste of the world’s first artificial womb facility.

The facility, called Ectolife, is the brainchild of Berlin biotechnologist Hashem Al-Ghaili.

Capable of rearing 30,000 babies annually, the facility would allow infertile couples to conceive a baby.

And a so-called “elite package” would allow you to genetically engineer the embryo before implanting it in the artificial womb.

From eye and hair color to strength, height and intelligence, everything can be chosen and inherited hereditary diseases avoided.

Hashem explains: “Introducing EctoLife, the world’s first artificial womb facility powered entirely by renewable energy.

“According to the World Health Organization, around 300,000 women die from pregnancy complications.

“EctoLife’s artificial womb was designed to alleviate human suffering and reduce the likelihood of cesarean sections.”

“With EctoLife, premature births and caesarean sections are a thing of the past.”

Hashem notes that it also offers a solution for women who have had their uterus surgically removed due to cancer or other complications.

The founder believes the technology is already available and only ethical constraints are holding the concept from reality.

He says: “Every single feature mentioned in the concept is 100% science-based and has already been achieved by scientists and engineers.”

“The only thing left is to build a prototype by combining all functions in a single device.

“In terms of timeframe, it really depends on the ethical guidelines. Research on human embryos is currently not permitted for more than 14 days.

“After 14 days, embryos must be destroyed for ethical reasons.

“If these ethical restrictions are relaxed, I give 10 to 15 years before we use EctoLife widely everywhere.”

The facility has 75 well-equipped laboratories, each capable of accommodating up to 400 growth capsules or artificial wombs.

How does it work?

Each capsule is designed to replicate the exact conditions that exist inside the mother’s womb. A single building can hatch up to 30,000 lab-grown babies a year.

The pods are equipped with a screen that displays real-time data on the baby’s developmental progress. The data can also be viewed via a phone app.

Hashem said: “EctoLife allows your baby to develop in an infection-free environment. The pods are made of materials that prevent germs from sticking to their surfaces.

“Each growth capsule has sensors that can monitor your baby’s vital signs, including heartbeat, temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation.

“The artificial intelligence-based system also monitors your baby’s physical characteristics and reports potential genetic abnormalities.”

Because babies are believed to recognize speech and learn words while still in the womb, EctoLife growth pods have internal speakers that play a variety of words and music to your baby.

An app allows you to choose which playlist a baby is listening to and sing directly to them to get familiar with your voice before birth.

“Our goal is to provide you with intelligent offspring that truly reflect your wise choices,” says Hashem.

“Thanks to the CRISPR-Cas 9 gene editing tool, you can edit any trait of your baby through a wide range of over 300 genes.”
