A Texas prosecutor quit his job days after the trial of a former border patrol agent accused of being a serial killer began. Joshua Davila was an assistant district attorney working on the case against Juan David Ortiz39

“I have officially left the Webb County District Attorney’s Office,” he said in a Facebook post KSAT. “This is the most unprofessional and toxic workplace I’ve ever dealt with. I don’t recommend it. I feel sorry for everyone I let down.”

The office confirmed his resignation, but did not respond to his criticism.

“The Webb County District Attorney’s Office can confirm that ADA Josh Davila resigned this morning,” the Law & Crime Bureau said in a statement. “This does not affect prosecution in this case.”

Ortiz, who served with the border patrol for nine years, is said to have targeted sex workers. Prosecutors presented four killed victims: Guiselda Alicia Hernandez, Claudine Anne Luera, Melissa Ramirezand Janelle Ortiz (aka Nikki Enriquez). He also tried to kidnap Erika PenaHowever, she fled, the investigators said.

Out of the arrest records:

At the gas station, Erika explained that she and David had started talking about Melissa [Ramirez] again. David then pulled out a black pistol and pointed it at her. Erika tried to get out of the vehicle. David grabbed her shirt to stop her exiting the vehicle. Erika started screaming for help. Erika removed her shirt so she could escape and run away from the vehicle. Erika saw a State Trooper vehicle fill up at the gas station. Erika ran to the trooper and asked for help.

The jury saw footage from the police interrogation room of Ortiz taunting a cop who “couldn’t keep up [him]’ during the foot hunt.

Prosecutors said Ortiz confessed to investigators that he wanted to “clean up the streets.” He is said to have called the victims “dirt”.

“This case — the evidence will show — is about a man who has betrayed his badge, he has betrayed his country, he has betrayed his family, he has betrayed his community for his own selfish needs,” the district attorney said Webb County Isidro Alaniz said.

“One of the things that we’re asking you to focus on is the investigation that the Webb County Sheriff’s Office conducted in conjunction with the Texas Rangers,” Attorney Ortiz said Raymond Fuchs said. “Along with the writing of reports, the lack of reports, the lack of logs and how they just came to certain conclusions.”
