Almost every 49ers fan remembers where they were a little over a year ago when they heard the news that the All-Pro running back was retiring Christian McCaffrey had been taken over of San Francisco in one trade.
And before the 2023 NFL trade deadline on October 31, general manager John Lynch isn’t ruling out another headline-grabbing deal. On Friday, he told KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” that this time of year consists of “a lot of phone calls” as San Francisco keeps its options open for a trade – but only if it can help the 49ers, who have one in this one “I have a proven track record,” Lynch said.
“We’re certainly not afraid to make a splash when necessary and when we believe it can make us better,” Lynch said (h/t KNBR). “It’s not just a standard answer. I think there’s still Halloween where the trade deadline is, right after our Cincinnati game. So that’s a long time in that regard and we’ll continue to monitor, continue to communicate and if so, if we can make a difference on this team, that’s what we will do.”
With a 5-1 record in six games, the 49ers remain at the top of the NFC West standings even after their loss first defeat of the season in Week 6. Their squad was considered a Super Bowl-contending team at the start of the season, but there is always room for improvement.
McCaffrey’s arrival last October served as an offensive catalyst for the 49ers, and they have only lost one regular-season game since he became their running back. After using Edge Rusher Randy Gregory on trading With the Denver Broncos earlier this month, San Francisco still has a little over a week to make further moves they deem necessary for a Super Bowl berth.
San Francisco faces the Minnesota Vikings on the road this week on Monday Night Football. The team will then face the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8 on October 29th at Levi’s Stadium. Depending on how these two games go – both injury-wise and performance-wise – the 49ers front office could be busy at the end of the month.
