A man has been arrested after gardai discovered cannabis worth €246,000 in Clara, Co Offaly at the weekend.
The man, in his 50s, was arrested when gardai found the cannabis while searching a building on Saturday morning.
The search was carried out by Gardaí from the Laois/Offaly Divisional Drugs Unit and regular units with assistance from the DMR West Drugs Unit.
Gardai said approximately €246,000 of suspected herbal cannabis was seized during the search.
The drugs will now undergo analysis by Forensic Science Ireland (FSI).
“A man, aged in his 50s, has been arrested and is currently being held at a Garda station in County Offaly under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996,” Gardai said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
Gardai said the seizure was part of Operation Tara, the expanded national anti-drugs strategy launched in July 2021 by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.
The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels – international, national, local – involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sales and supply of controlled drugs.
