A man was shot during a carjacking outside an Islamic center in Upper Darby on Sunday evening.
According to police, the victim, a 65-year-old man, was shot in the chest near the Masjid Al-Madinah Islamic Center. He was pronounced dead by medics.
According to Brother Siddique of the Islamic Center, the shots were fired around 7:45 p.m. as people entered the mosque for evening prayers.
Brother Siddique said he heard four shots.
The victim’s car was impounded and recovered by police a short time later, Upper Darby Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt said.
At this time, police do not believe this incident was a hate crime, motivated by bias, or based on the victim’s mosque membership.
According to Bernhardt, it was probably a random act of violence and a carjacking.
At this time there is no further information from the police.
