Marcus Smart fined $25,000 after a dispute with Trae Young at the end of the Celtics-Hawks game

As you’d expect, Marcus Smart and Trae Young made for a cool pairing in Atlanta on Saturday.

In the final minutes of a game between the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and All-Star point guard got into the game until they both hit the floor after Smart brought Young.

The impetus for the run-in appeared to come when a stray kick from Young Smart landed in a sensitive area on a drive. Smart immediately confronted Young, who didn’t back down.

The end result was a ejection for Smart and a technical foul for Young. Smart got the last laugh, however, as the Celtics clinched a 134-125 win minutes later. Young finished the game with 35 points and 13 assists while Smart had 11 points and six assists.

Officer Sean Wright explained the decision to give Young a technical to a post-game pool reporter, and described the guard as “standing up and pointing at Marcus Smart’s face”. Smart’s side of the action, meanwhile, has been dubbed “Grabs.” [Young] and throw him to the ground.”

Neither player said much after the game, with Hawks head coach Quin Snyder saying “It’s over” and expressing a desire to move on.

The NBA on Monday fined him $25,000 for his role in the incident. Young was not penalized.

The win improved the Celtics’ record to 47-21 and put them within 1.5 games of the Milwaukee Bucks to become the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
