How James Gunn can change the DCU

James Gunn and the DCEU intro

While it may be bittersweet to see Gunn leave the MCU, there’s still work to be done in the DCU. One of the main ways he can change and improve the DCU is to create a central focus for the franchise. Over the years, DCU films have lacked direction, focus, and connection, leading to confusion and plot gaps. Gunn has already hinted that creating a truly unified universe will be one of his first projects with the DCU. He promised that all of DC’s movies and shows will be connected in the future.

Another major change Gunn could bring about is DC giving more creative freedom to the directors of DCU films. Studio interference has caused some trouble in DC, and Warner Bros. has been accused of meddling justice league and David Ayers 2016 suicide squad, the directors attribute the films’ shortcomings, at least in part, to such interventions. Meanwhile, when Gunn rebooted The Suicide Squad, it performed much better than Ayer’s because Gunn was given more creative freedom. By allowing more creative freedom for the directors, they may be able to deliver more nuanced films while remaining consistent with the comics and the overall vision for the DCU. Gunn has the potential to change that DCU by fixing its connectivity issues and perhaps putting more power in the hands of directors.
