Millions of iPhone owners today need to check settings – it’s dangerous not to

APPLE has rolled out a brand new update to millions of iPhones – so it’s time to install it.
The update includes some bug fixes, but also includes important security updates.
That means you need to update your iPhone to iOS 16.1.2 as soon as possible.
If you have an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, it has the added benefit of improving Accident Detection – the new iOS feature that calls emergency services if it thinks you’ve been in a car accident.
It’s possible that this update will reduce the number of false positives after reports surfaced of coasters triggering the emergency response.
However, it is extremely important to get the latest security fixes for all iOS 16 compatible models.
Apple added, “Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to help keep your Apple product secure.”
The update is available now for free and it is extremely important that you install it as soon as possible.
No support
The bad news is that not all users can get iOS 16.1.2.
If you can upgrade to iOS 16, you’re fine, but anyone with a very old iPhone model will miss out.
Here is a list of all devices supported by iOS 16 (and iOS 16.1.1):
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14Plus
- iPhone 14 pro
- iPhone 14 pro max
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13 pro
- iPhone 13 Pro max
- iphone 12
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 pro
- iPhone 12 pro max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 pro
- iPhone 11 Pro max
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8plus
- iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)
If you can’t get the latest iOS, you’ll lose access to the latest security fixes.
These are critical patches that close vulnerabilities used by hackers to gain access to your systems.
So using a very old iPhone that cannot be updated could put you at risk.
If you can’t update to iOS 16, you’d better update your iPhone sooner rather than later.
Before you update
Before any major iPhone update, you should back up your phone.
That’s because it’s easy to go wrong with an update and you don’t want to lose your valuable data like photos or videos.
To do this, simply go to the iCloud settings on your iPhone and turn on the “iCloud Backup” feature.
Alternatively, connect your phone to iTunes and select the “Back Up Now” option.
How to update iPhone wirelessly
The easiest way to update your iPhone is wirelessly – just follow these simple steps:
- Plug your iPhone into a power outlet and connect to a Wi-Fi network
- Tap Settings > General > Software update
- Tap Download and Install.
- Tap Download and Install to update instantly, or plug in your phone overnight to automatically update while you sleep.
- You may need to enter your passcode

If you don’t have enough space on your phone for the update, Apple may ask you if some apps can be temporarily removed from your phone.
But don’t worry: Apple will reinstall all deleted apps, including any data you have stored in those apps.
