Nasa unveils stunning, never-before-seen image of the Moon and Earth together in space as the lunar mission reaches a milestone

NASA has unveiled some stunning new images of the Moon and Earth during the course of its Artemis mission.

On Monday afternoon, NASA’s Orion spacecraft reached its furthest distance from Earth: 268,563 miles.

It broke the record for the maximum distance ever traveled by a spacecraft designed to carry people, NASA said in a tweet.

Now Nasa has shared some stunning images captured by this milestone in their Artemis mission.

The photos show the earth and moon throughout the day from vantage points never seen before.

At one point, the moon appears to eclipse the earth as the two bodies slowly move clockwise.

Orion captured the photos with its 16 cameras, which are capable of capturing images in a range of formats, from high definition to 4K.

Nasa officials said the spacecraft’s performance so far has been “outstanding.”

Orion program manager Howard Hu told reporters Monday that the spacecraft is actually exceeding expectations in some areas.

It produces around 20 percent more electricity than it actually needs.

The Artemis Mission

Artemis is the name of NASA’s mission to bring people back to the moon – inclusive the first woman and the first colored person.

After several failed launch attempts, the Orion spacecraft successfully launched on November 16, 2022 at approximately 1:47 a.m. EST.

This first launch will enable NASA to analyze Orion’s systems in a space environment.

This is to ensure that a safe re-entry, descent, splashdown and recovery is possible before the astronauts lift off.

Nasa says the spacecraft is currently running in “healthy condition” as it continues its journey to a distant retrograde orbit.

“Because of the incredible spirit of creativity, Artemis I has had extraordinary success, completing a series of history-making events,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“It’s amazing how smoothly this mission went, but this is a test. That’s what we do – we test it and we emphasize it.”
