Tennessee Basketball announced Wednesday that starting point guard Zakai Zeigler has torn his cruciate ligament and will miss the NCAA tournament.

Zeigler suffered the injury in Tuesday’s win against Arkansas. The news comes as a brutal blow to Zeigler and a 12th-ranked Vols team that has their sights set on a deep NCAA tournament run.

Zeigler, a sophomore, is averaging 10.7 points, 5.4 assists and two steals this season. As one of the nation’s top defenders, he was one of 10 players nominated as a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award last week. He was the only true point guard on the roster to have significant playing time that season.
