Pauly Shore wishes his 2 nominated former co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser the best of luck

Pauly Shore is aware that among this year’s Oscar nominees are two of his former co-stars from his 1992 teen comedy Encino man, which has a few laughs, yes, but isn’t exactly Oscar bait. (Shore’s Razzie appears to be the only award he’s won.) And he’s smitten with Brendan Fraser, who played a frozen caveman that Shore’s character Stoney Brown found in his backyard and brought back to life, winning Best Actor is awarded for his work in the category The whale; The same applies to Ke Huy Quan, who plays a smaller role Encino man and who can be named best supporting actor next Sunday for his performance in very good Everything everywhere at once.
“It’s pretty remarkable,” Shore said in a message which aired in Friday’s edition of Good morning America (from about 2:25 in the video below). “It’s a crazy story… what a comeback! It’s almost like they’re there Encino man, they’ve defogged them and they’re coming back to life. Anyway, I’ll watch the movie this weekend Encino man, at the same time see who will take home the prize. Congratulations folks! Good luck boys!”
Shore even blew them a kiss.
A day earlier, he shared a sweet message with Fraser and Quan on social media.
Shore’s candid post included a link to an interview he conducted slatein which he offered even more support.
“I’m not surprised because at the end of the day, talent wins. Brendan was just so lucky that this director went in there and knighted him and hit him on the head with a little bit of pixie dust or whatever, and Brendan stepped up, and he had the emotions and he had the layers and he became to this figure. And I’m very proud of him,” Shore said. “Both boys are – all of their hearts come through in these characters. And that’s what it’s really about, connecting with people with your heart. And they both made it. So whether they win, whether they don’t win, they’ve already won me over because they’ve done a great job.”
Fraser in particular, who played the crucial role of the caveman and was often his scene partner, received a shoutout.
“He became a character. That’s what a good actor does,” Shore said. “He doesn’t caricature – he didn’t caricature any of the characters [in Encino Man or The Whale]. That’s why he was so good at it Encino man. That’s why the comedy caught his eye and why the story worked, because he engages with these characters. I know Ben Stiller auditioned [for Fraser’s part in Encino Man]and a lot of people wanted to play that role, but it takes a real actor to play a caveman so it doesn’t look stupid.”

In fact, Shore confirmed to Yahoo Entertainment in June 2022 that executives initially wanted it him to play the role of the caveman. He said no because he had a signature way of speaking, as anyone who’s seen any of his films or footage from his MTV VJ days knows, that just wouldn’t have worked for it. The caveman named Link mostly grunts.
“I said, ‘Cavemen don’t talk. I have my own style,'” Shore said. “So we rewrote one of the roles and made it more like my MTV thing with a little heart.”
The 55-year-old actor was also asked if he envisioned a similar comeback.
“I’m at the age now where I think that with the right role, with the right director, with the right script, it would be really exciting to do something against the guy,” he told Slate. “I think I would get a lot of attention if I did something dramatic. I did something on my channel called Sin City Psycho. It’s a 10 minute short where I play a sociopath and it’s totally against the type. So yes, my story is no different from anyone’s story. Everyone wants that opportunity to get that call [acclaimed The Whale director] Darren Aronofsky.”
For now, Shore said he and at least one other co-star are dating Encino manSean Astin are interested in a sequel.
