Pokemon Detective Pikachu Sequel Gets Director Jonathan Crisis

The “Pokemon Detective Pikachu“Sequel finally got a director.

Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Crisis is in negotiations with Legendary Entertainment to direct the sequel to the 2019 live-action film Pokémon. Chris Galletta will write the screenplay.

Crisisel was a co-creator, screenwriter, and executive producer of the IFC sketch comedy show “Portlandia,” which starred co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein in a variety of odd situations in Portland, Oregon. He also co-created, wrote and directed “Baskets” for FX, starring Zach Galifianakis as the rodeo clown. Previously, Galletta wrote the coming-of-age comedy The Kings of Summer in 2013.

The original Pokémon Detective Pikachu starred Ryan Reynolds as the talking, coffee-loving Pikachu who introduced himself as Sherlock Holmes. The Electric Mouse teams up with Tim Goodman, a hapless Pokémon trainer played by Justice Smith, to find Tim’s missing father. The cast included Kathryn Newton, currently starring in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Suki Waterhouse, Ken Watanabe, Rita Ora and more.

It was the first live-action “Pokémon” film ever, after the hit video game franchise has sold more than 440 million video games, tens of billions of Pokémon cards, and more than 1,200 episodes of the popular anime series worldwide. It’s been a big week for Pokémon so far; On Monday, Netflix announced a new stop-motion animated series entitled “Pokémon Concierge”, will be published on the streamer. There is also a Live action Netflix series in early development, the diversity only reported in 2021.

Crisis is represented by UTA, Mosaic and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich & Gellman. Galletta is represented by UTA and Anonymous Content.
