Rank is less important on Discovery than on other Star Trek shows
Star Trek: Discovery always focuses on Captain Michael Burnham. The rest of the Discovery crew were also promoted, but without fanfare.

Instead, Captain Burnham and the Discovery crew are on a treasure hunt for the galaxy “greatest prize.” Meanwhile, aboard Discovery, Burnham is surrounded by a senior crew.
Many fans will be surprised to learn that almost all of Captain Burnham’s crew were promoted earlier in the year Star Trek: Discovery season 4 discovery The end of season three was the culmination of Burnham’s roller coaster ride to become captain of the Discovery. Between seasons, however, Michael’s bridge crew has all improved. Unless the audience was watching closely, it was easy to miss that Helmsman Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Operations Officer JoAnn Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) became Lieutenant Commanders. Meanwhile, Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) became a full-fledged Commander in Engineering. But all this was done without the pomp and circumstance offered to Captain Burnham. As a result, Discovery now feels like Captain Kirk’s (William Shatner) Enterprise in the bridge star trek Movies where almost everyone was at least a commander.
Why Discovery downplays crew ranks
Even though Star Trek: Discovery features a talented cast, there’s no question that the show is centered around Michael Burnham. Even more than the captains of other Star Trek series, Burnham is the center of attention Star Trek: Discovery who drives the action and main story of each season. The rest of Star Trek: Discovery‘s cast supports Michael, even Saru (Doug Jones), who is also captain and preceded Burnham as captain of the Discovery. But there Michael is undisputed discovery‘s star and focal point, everyone else is largely downplayed to keep Captain Burnham in the dramatic spotlight. Star Trek: Discovery doesn’t give as much time to the rest of the cast by comparison, and details like their promotions suffer as a result.
Structurally, Star Trek: Discovery has never been like this Star Trek: The Next Generation or Star Trek: Voyageralthough it’s also based on a spaceship. discovery is serialized and much more dramatic and operatic than other Star Trek series. discovery is a very different kind of Star Trek show, inspired by and sharing his DNA with JJ Abrams star trek Movies more than the 1990s series. Michael Burnham’s whirlwind Starfleet career is comparable to how James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) became Captain of the Enterprise in star trek 2009, except it spanned multiple seasons instead of two breakneck hours.
Rank is more important in other Star Trek shows
Shows how Star Trek: The Next Generation are far more methodical than Star Trek: Discovery and promotions are presented as significant events in the life of the crew. Perhaps the most memorable promotion has arrived Star Trek generations when the officers of the USS Enterprise-D, clad in full 19th-century British naval regalia, converged on the holodeck to appoint Worf (Michael Dorn) as Lt. promote commander. Promotion also became a character’s goal, such as when Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) sat an exam to become a Commander TNG season 7
But even without the comedic theatrics offered by Worf’s promotion, the times when Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) was eventually promoted to captain, or Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) from major to colonel, jumped on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine got their rights. Star Trek: DiscoveryMass promotion of most of her cast members, which many fans complain takes up more screen time overall, seemed too expedient to them. In addition, it is questionable whether the bridge crew of the USS Discovery would remain at their posts, given their high rank, instead of moving to other ships. This includes Captain Saru, who inexplicably remains aboard Discovery. But overall, rank is less important compared to plain Star Trek: Discovery’s action-packed drama revolved around Captain Michael Burnham.
