Rich Men singer Oliver Anthony says he’s not a conservative political pawn

OliverAnthony — the singer whose “Rich Men North of Richmond” currently tops the charts — says his message has been tarnished and, contrary to what many might think, he’s not a political chess ball for conservatives to use.
The Virginia native spoke out in a self-recorded video just days after Republicans played his song during the first presidential debate.
Anthony finds it funny because he wrote his hit about the very people on stage and how they lost their care and consideration for the common, working man.
The country folk singer points out that his message goes beyond a political party, noting, “It’s annoying to see people on conservative news trying to identify with me like I’m one of them.”
Anthony’s song seems to be aimed at politicians as a whole, not a specific side of the ballot, he notes: “This song has nothing to do with Joe Biden, it’s much bigger than Joe Biden.”
He says: “I see the right trying to characterize me as one of their own and I see the left trying to discredit me. I guess it’s retaliation. That has to stop.”
At one point, Anthony gets emotional as he talks about the future of the country, including young lives lost in senseless ways… He says everyone needs to come together and stop being so divisive, something he will work to change , he says.
