Ring is making a major update to the doorbell app – and fans are furious

RING revamps its app – and fans swear to boycott the brand in favor of Google.

The Amazon-owned app announced it will lock down a number of features behind a paywall, much to the dismay of its users.

A Basic subscription costs £3.49 a month or £34.99 a year, while a Plus plan costs £8 a month or £80 a year

Core features like Home and Away modes are currently free.

Home mode tells the Ring device that the user is home, so no motion alerts are triggered.

While the away function ensures that cameras are recording at all times, sensors throughout the house are also on the lookout for movement.

But the favorite features won’t be free for much longer.

Ring has proposed a subscription-style paywall called a Ring Protect planwhich will come into force on March 29th.

A Basic subscription costs £3.49 per month or £34.99 per year. While a Plus plan costs £8 a month or £80 a year.

People Alerts – Notifications when a person has been spotted, photo previews of alerts, and saving and sharing videos will also be stripped from users unless they pay.

Those same customers can’t even access Amazon Alexa voice control through the app without paying a monthly fee.

This is the same Alexa found in other Amazon products like the Echo smart speaker.

Ring device owners have since vowed to get rid of their doorbells and cameras.

A dissatisfied customer named Brandon wrote on Tiwtter: “Drawn mine @Ring doorbell and went shopping @Google home one.

“I’ve seen it before with companies forcing users into a subscription model by using services they previously had.”

Another Twitter user wrote: “@Ring Taking away features sucks.

“I would like a refund for the two Ring Doorbells I have, which are even more useless without a subscription.”
