The marketing for Saw
As audiences returned to theaters following the 2020-2021 pandemic shutdown, popular theater chain AMC Theaters felt the need to get people excited about going to the movies again. The company conceived a dramatic commercial that would make us introspective and attempt to poetically capture the feeling of experiencing a film in the theater. The promo shows Nicole Kidman delivering an impassioned monologue while sitting with her drink in an empty cinema and enjoying clips from current films. Perhaps the schmaltzy, serious nature of the promo helped it gain notoriety, as it was the subject of various memes and parodies, including one SNL sketch.
The twisted heads at Lionsgatebehind what is coming Saw X, have just released their own promo satirizing Nicole Kidman’s AMC commercial. Only this time it’s Jigsaw who takes the audience on the journey, on his tricycle. Jigsaw rides to his perch, poetically illustrating the wonders of his elaborate traps and the emotional journey of torture that his victims, and by extension the audience, go through as they experience every wince-inducing graphic detail on the big screen.
The marketing for Saw X really enjoys her cheekiness. Recently, the film released a video that was a twist on the classic Milton Bradley board game Operation. A game that emphasizes surgical precision in dissecting the human body. In the social media post, the tweet is captioned: “Be careful who you put under the knife. #SawX #SawTenber.” The teaser video features a cheeky parody of Milton Bradley’s popular board game, Operation. Only now has it happened Seen Style. The board game is renamed “Saw-peration” and the game’s slogan is “I want to play a game.” The game is designed with Jigsaw’s image and plays an audio clip of creepy laughter.
The synopsis for Saw X reads, “The next installment from Twisted Pictures sees the return of John Kramer (Tobin Bell) and the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s final games. Set between events of I saw that And II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of finding a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover that the entire operation is a scam designed to defraud the most vulnerable. The infamous serial killer returns to his work and, in his signature, instinctive way, turns the tables on the fraudsters through devious, crazy and ingenious traps.”
