Sequins and sparkly looks are trending on the 2023 MTV VMAs red carpet – WWD

Glitter and sequin embellishments took the runways of Valentino, Jil Sander and Rick Owens by storm last season. The stars of the MTV Video Music Awards, which took place on Tuesday in Newark, New Jersey, are now taking advantage of the trend.

Shakira, Olivia Rodrigo and Selena Gomez were among the celebrities who opted for shiny ensembles. Ahead, WWD outlines the best and brightest insights from this year’s VMAs.

Shakira

Shakira dazzled in a gold Versace chain dress that featured side cutouts and a thigh-high slit. The Video Vanguard award winner, styled by Nicolas Bru, accessorized with diamond rings.

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo’s sparkling Ludovic de Saint Sernin dress was adorned with 150,000 Swarovski crystals. The singer added a pair of sparkly Roger Vivier open-toe platforms. Stylist Danielle Goldberg, who also dresses Lily Aldridge, Laura Harrier and Kaia Gerber, curated Rodrigo’s look for the event.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez sought the style of Erin Walsh, who put together the singer’s botanical Oscar de la Renta ensemble. Gomez’s sparkling halter dress was decorated with floral motifs covered in scarlet beads that matched the hue of her open-toe satin Jimmy Choo pumps. She also added a matching set of diamond jewelry from Pasquale Bruni, which included a bracelet, cocktail ring and statement earrings.

Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter stepped out in a ruched, sheer purple dress with an iridescent bustier and floor-length train. The singer’s diamond and platinum jewels from Jacob & Co. included emerald and Ashoka cut rings and a three-carat heart pendant necklace.

Sofia Carson

Sofia Carson opted for a head-to-toe sparkling cobalt ensemble from Alexandre Vauthier’s Fall 2022 Couture collection. Carson’s look featured a long-sleeved dress with statement shoulders, embellished with increasingly large sequins and matched with her pair of pointed sock boots.

Saweetie

Giving a modern twist to Flintstones fashion, Saweetie wore a crystal cutout dress from Area’s Fall 2023 Couture collection. Styled by Marta Del Rio, the rapper completed her look with metallic pink pumps and a pair of diamond hoop earrings.

Since 1984, the MTV Video Music Awards have honored the biggest artists of the year. The 40th VMAs, taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, will be hosted by Nicki Minaj and feature a brand new category: Show of the Summer. Shakira receives the coveted Video Vanguard Award, while P Diddy is honored with the Global Icon Award.
