Several young people are believed to have died and others were critically injured in an unusual road accident in Tipperary.

It is understood the four involved were driving to a graduation ceremony and were in a single vehicle involved in a collision outside of Clonmel.

According to local reports, the four, a driver and three passengers, suffered a combination of serious and life-threatening injuries, with several being pronounced dead before they could be taken to hospital.

According to initial reports, the vehicle involved at the time of the accident may have been taking a group of young people to a Leaving Cert event in the town of Tipperary.

The collision happened just after 7 p.m. on Mountain Road at the southern entrance to the city.

Initial fears are that the vehicle involved may have gone out of control and then rolled over on a very steep section of road.

It is not believed that another vehicle was involved.

Gardaí confirmed it was dealing with a number of fatalities.

“Gardaí is currently at the scene of a fatal road accident involving a single vehicle near Clonmel. Initial indications are that several people have died.”

“An Garda Síochána is currently unable to provide any further information as Gardaí and other emergency services continue to work on site.”

“Gardaí is also in the process of informing the families of this tragic incident and is asking for time and space to do so.”

The mountain road is known locally for the fact that it climbs very steeply in places.

It connects the town of southern Tipperary with Waterford and the eastern part of the Knockmealdown Mountains.

After the clash, a major emergency response operation was launched, with multiple ambulances, the Tipperary Fire Brigade and Garda units on the scene.

The road was closed to facilitate the work of the emergency services.

Gardaí have urged motorists to avoid the area and set up diversions.

A major emergency response has been deployed at South Tipperary General Hospital with medical standby support at both University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and Cork University Hospital (CUH).
