Shania Twain recalls being “uncontrollably fragile” over ex Robert “Mutt” Lange’s affair, “never” staying in touch with Marie-Anne Thiebaud

That doesn’t impress her that much. Shania Twain gave a rare update on her relationship (or lack thereof) with her ex-husband Robert “Mut” Lange and former friend Marie Anne Thiebaud 15 years after their affair, the country music icon rocked the world.

“When life was going so well, I got used to it too well and almost forgot that you never know what’s around the next corner. That hit me hard,” Twain, 57, said on a recent episode of the Podcast “Armchair Expert”. when the topic of their divorce came up. “I don’t think a lot of things that have happened to me since my divorce should have been that hard on me. I should have been less naïve when it came to life’s ups and downs. Maybe I’m too much, like, ‘This is all behind me.'”

Dax Schäfer admitted he was “really nervous” to address the fact that the “Honey! I’m Home’ singer is now married to Thiébaud’s ex-husband, Frederic Thiebaudbecause he didn’t know if she was embarrassed about the subject.

“It’s not embarrassing,” Twain replied.

Twain and Lange, who have collaborated on several of their best-selling albums, split in 2008 amid affair allegations. The two couples were friends for years before they played “musical chairs” — as Shepard put it.

“I didn’t get close to Fred at all, we didn’t have each other’s numbers. He wasn’t really part of our daily life because he works these crazy hours. Travel a lot [for his] very high profile company, just a suit and tie, and that’s how he was there, like weekend dinners and things like that — we all ate together and that was it,” Twain said of her relationship with Frédéric before they found out about the scam. “And then mostly he and Mutt would talk, so I didn’t know Fred that well. I think it was a nice surprise then to see how gracefully and kindly he dealt with the same pain.

The two linked when they ended their respective marriages.

“He thought it all through so well. … It wasn’t cool with him, but he was smarter,” Twain explained. “I was uncontrollably fragile about it, which I’d never felt before, thinking I was exceptionally stable. I really think I’m safe, so that really devastated me, I think, more than any other instability I’ve ever felt.”

Twain said she couldn’t believe she could be “that stupid,” but when Frédéric went through the same thing, she felt better.

“Fred is so smart. This is one of the smartest people I know [and] he didn’t know either. That helped me feel better. …None of us saw it coming. … I allowed myself to trust too much. … I’ve let my guard down too much,” the Grammy winner continued. “Nevertheless, I was angry. The anger also often comes from my childhood because I’m like, ‘Man, you can do anything to me, but if you fucking lie, right in my fucking face? Now I’m so angry.” It wasn’t just “infidelity happened.” That was not me. I spun around in it for a while. That was really the hardest part, letting go, the anger.”

Twain confirmed that Lange and Marie-Anne are still together, but they haven’t been in contact unless she needs to text about her son Eja, who was born in 2001.

“I never have. I mean, Mutt and I have good parents together — for people who don’t talk to each other,” Twain said. “We just text. We both love our son so much, so we don’t play games like that.” “We have the same priority, we share rooms for him. There’s no nonsense. … I think everyone gets what they deserve. … I got what I deserve – I have the tallest man in the world.”
